It is the policy of the United States Probation Office to work closely with the community in monitoring offenders and defendants under supervision. Probation Officers work diligently to ensure that all potential sources of information regarding the adjustment and behavior of offenders are considered during our investigation and supervision process.
It is common for members of the community, family, friends, and neighbors, to contact us with information about a person under federal supervision. It is also common for us to be contacted and asked questions about a person who we may be supervising or investigating. Please understand that the regulations regarding the confidentiality of our records does not allow us to generally divulge personal information about persons for whom we have responsibility. The information gather during the course of investigations or supervision cannot be released without the permission of the Court.
One exception to this release of information process is the requirement that we ensure the safety of any potential third-parties who may be affected by persons under our supervision. Third-parties could be employers, family members, or acquaintances who due to the specific circumstances of an individual offender may be at physical or economic risk. Under those parameters, we will make notice to a potential victim.
In addition to the above, the District advises all law enforcement agencies of the release of offenders in their community consistent with federal law, and requires compliance by offenders with all state laws regarding registration of sex offenders.
